From the editor's desk
A quiet paper for deliberate readers.
We break down what your car actually costs you—purchase price is just the start. From depreciation curves to the repair-or-replace decision, we run the math so you can drive smarter.
TreadCost is kept the way a good household ledger is kept: by hand, in order, and without hurry. We do not chase the hour's commotion. Each piece we publish is read aloud before it is set, trimmed of anything that flatters the writer rather than serves the reader, and dated plainly so you always know where you stand. If a subject cannot be made clearer in the space of one sitting, we leave it to someone louder.
Our pages favour the durable over the urgent. You will find careful explainers that begin with the answer rather than the throat-clearing, reference tables meant to be consulted more than once, and plain-spoken answers to the questions readers actually write in about. We assume you are busy, intelligent, and tired of being shouted at — and we edit accordingly.
Everything here is written to be kept. Print it, mark it, pass it along. Nothing on this site requires an account, a subscription, or your patience with a paywall, and nothing you read is tracked beyond the ordinary workings of a web server. That is the whole of the bargain.
The record
Notes on how things work, written down before they are forgotten. Steady explanations of everyday systems — money, tools, habits, and the small machinery of a well-run life.
The reference shelf
Tables, comparisons, and glossaries built to be consulted rather than read once and discarded. If you bookmark only one kind of page here, let it be these.
The correspondence
Answers to the questions readers send us most, settled in plain language. Each answer begins with the conclusion and shows its working afterwards, so you can stop reading the moment you are satisfied.

Our undertaking
TreadCost is an independent publication. We hold no stake in the things we write about, we accept no placement we would not print on its own merits, and we correct our errors in the same type they were made. What you read here is the considered opinion of a small desk of writers who believe that clarity is a form of courtesy — and that a reader's attention, once given, should never be wasted.
